I wanted to try a story but I have to warn you I am not a writer. So forgive me now for any errors you find. If any of you would like to be my beta, I would be grateful
I appreciated everyone’s feedback on the first chapter. I am overwhelmed. I didn’t think anybody would like it. Receiving responses from some of my favorite authors is truly amazing. Thank you.

Summary – Irv wants Andy to help him get rid of Miranda but will she do it
Title – A Game of Chess Part 2
Andy was walking towards the Elias-Clarke building two days later. She was going over in her head everything she discussed with Irv the previous night.
“Nancy in HR will send you to Emily, Miranda’s first assistant. She will dislike you from the start and make your life hell which is what we want. She worships Miranda and Runway. I think she even has a shrine of Miranda in her home.” He chuckled on the phone.
Andy sips her wine while sitting on her couch in her apartment “Oh goody this is going to be fun. What makes you so sure she is going to hire me? I mean there is no guarantee; I am not exactly the assistant type. “
“She will” Irv replied with confidence. “You are intelligent, resourceful, and confident with an unbelievable work ethic. You’re also beautiful and Miranda likes beautiful things. Just downplay the confidence a little. Remember this is supposed to be your first job. You’re still wet behind the ears not a high powered corporate raider.”
“Well if she doesn’t hire me you are still paying all my expenses while Simon and I spend the next three months in the Caribbean.”
Irv laughs “Deal.”
“So let me get this straight. No one will know my relationship with you? I am posing as a fresh out of college and still wet behind the ears Journalist who is desperate for a job. All I have to do is be second assistant to the Dragon Lady and keep my eyes and ears open for any information that you might find interesting?’
“That’s it” Irv says “remember be at HR at 7:30 sharp. Dress for success and call me tomorrow.”
“You’re a funny man Irv.”
Andy arrives at HR promptly at 7:30. Dressed in simple black pants with a sweater and tan jacket, she knew that an unemployed college graduate would not be wearing an Armani power suit.
“HI, I’m Andy Sachs. I am here for an interview with Runway Magazine.”
“Yes Andrea, take the elevator to their office and see an Emily Charlton.”
“Thank you very much.” Andy says as she turns and walks away.
Walking through the doors at Runway to the reception desk Andy is taken back by all the activity.
“Hi, I have an appointment with Emily Charlton.”
“Andrea Sachs?” a voice calls out. She gazed bewilderingly at Andy and continued “Great, Human Resources certainly have an odd sense of humor. Follow me.”
Walking down a long corridor the redhead begins to speak. “Okay so I was Miranda’s second assistant. Her first assistant was recently promoted so now I am the first.”
“Oh you’re replacing yourself” Andy said as she follows behind her.
“Well I am trying Miranda has sacked a different girl every week. We need to find someone who can survive here. Do you understand?”
“Yes of course. Who’s Miranda?”
Emily keeps walking but turns with a look of horror on her face “Oh my god! I will pretend you just did not ask me that. She is the Editor In Chief of Runway. Not to mention a legend. Work a year for her and you can get a job at any magazine you want. A million girls would kill for this job.”
“Sounds like a great opportunity I would love to be considered.” Andy said as they entered the office.
Emily turned and chuckled “Andrea, Runway is a fashion magazine so interest in fashion is crucial.”
Andy shook her head slightly ‘going to love working with her’ and said “what makes you think I am not interested in fashion.”
Just then the redhead’s blackberry rang. “Oh my god no, no, no.”
“What’s wrong” asks Andy.
Suddenly people are moving in every direction. Everyone had a common look in their eyes ‘fear’. Emily is now running back and forth between the offices. Andy noticed how panicked the girl looks while placing magazines, pouring Pellegrino into a glass and placing it on the Editors desk. Andy thought she was watching a movie. It was actually entertaining. Then Emily darted back down the same hall in which they came from.
Andy sat at a desk and waited. Her first glimpse of Miranda lived up to her expectations. Miranda entered the office rattling off instructions while a nervous Emily frantically writes them down. Without missing a beat she removes her coat while speaking. Andy was mesmerized. Miranda was beautiful and definitely had a presence. She oozed self control. ‘So this is the legendary Dragon Lady.’ Andy watched as the pair entered the other office. ‘This might be tougher than I thought’.
A stunned looking Emily returned “She wants to see you”.
Andy got up ‘moment of truth’. Walking into Miranda’s office she handed her a resume and stood in front of the Editor’s desk. Andy was trying to size her up. Like a true lawyer she needed to watch all her movements carefully. Andy started speaking. “I am here to apply for the job as your assistant. I just recently graduated Northwestern. I majored in Journalism and was Editor of the school paper…” All of which was true except the recently graduated from and she minored in Journalism.
“What are you doing here?” Miranda replied as she casually moved things on her desk and then started to read the paper.
Andy was annoyed that Miranda was not looking at her, ‘What a bitch, at least pretend to be interested’ Andy was trying to keep her own attitude in check. Now is not the time to be confident. “Well to be quite honest, I need a job. I had no luck finding work as a writer. This came up so here I am.” She took a deep breath ‘this is humiliating, I am a lawyer for god sakes.’ then continued “I will work really hard for you. I have great organizational skills, will be 100% dedicated to the job and will do whatever you ask.” She was cringing on the inside ‘god I am pathetic.’
Miranda looked up at her and took off her glasses. A slight smirk appeared on her lips. She leaned back into her chair as her eyes took in the young woman in front of her. ‘No model but attractive, no style but Nigel will have a ball playing Queer Eye with her’ she thought. ‘HR might actually get the paperwork filed this time.’ She put her glasses back on and started reading the paper again. “I’ll hold you to that. You’re hired”.
Andy smiled “Thank you, you won’t…”
“That’s all.”
As soon as she existed the building she immediately made a call.
“Ravitz” the familiar voice answered.
“Stage one complete” chimed Andy
“Excellent” said a gleeful Irv. “Remember I want to know everything she does.”
“Got it” replied Andy.
“Just curious, what did you think of her?”
“She is …….well captivating to watch but I am sure working for her is going to be a different story.”
“Don’t worry if anything happens to you I will put you in for a Purple Heart.”
“If anything happens to me I will take said Heart and pin it on you and I know exactly where on you it will be.” Andy replied with a wicked tone and smile on her face.
“Ouch” an amused Irv replied.
“Exactly, I’ll be in touch. Bye Irv.” Andy closed her phone.
