I wanted to try a story but I have to warn you I am not a writer. So forgive me now for any errors you find. If any of you would like to be my beta, I would be grateful

I appreciated everyone’s feedback on the first chapter. I am overwhelmed. I didn’t think anybody would like it. Receiving responses from some of my favorite authors is truly amazing. Thank you.

Summary – Irv wants Andy to help him get rid of Miranda but will she do it

Title – A Game of Chess Part 2

Andy was walking towards the Elias-Clarke building two days later. She was going over in her head everything she discussed with Irv the previous night.

“Nancy in HR will send you to Emily, Miranda’s first assistant. She will dislike you from the start and make your life hell which is what we want. She worships Miranda and Runway. I think she even has a shrine of Miranda in her home.” He chuckled on the phone.

Andy sips her wine while sitting on her couch in her apartment “Oh goody this is going to be fun.  What makes you so sure she is going to hire me? I mean there is no guarantee; I am not exactly the assistant type. “

“She will” Irv replied with confidence. “You are intelligent, resourceful, and confident with an unbelievable work ethic. You’re also beautiful and Miranda likes beautiful things. Just downplay the confidence a little. Remember this is supposed to be your first job. You’re still wet behind the ears not a high powered corporate raider.”

“Well if she doesn’t hire me you are still paying all my expenses while Simon and I spend the next three months in the Caribbean.”

Irv laughs “Deal.”

“So let me get this straight. No one will know my relationship with you? I am posing as a fresh out of college and still wet behind the ears Journalist who is desperate for a job. All I have to do is be second assistant to the Dragon Lady and keep my eyes and ears open for any information that you might find interesting?’

“That’s it” Irv says “remember be at HR at 7:30 sharp. Dress for success and call me tomorrow.”

“You’re a funny man Irv.”

Andy arrives at HR promptly at 7:30. Dressed in simple black pants with a sweater and tan jacket, she knew that an unemployed college graduate would not be wearing an Armani power suit.

“HI, I’m Andy Sachs. I am here for an interview with Runway Magazine.”

“Yes Andrea, take the elevator to their office and see an Emily Charlton.”

“Thank you very much.” Andy says as she turns and walks away.

Walking through the doors at Runway to the reception desk Andy is taken back by all the activity.

“Hi, I have an appointment with Emily Charlton.”

“Andrea Sachs?” a voice calls out. She gazed bewilderingly at Andy and continued “Great, Human Resources certainly have an odd sense of humor. Follow me.”

Walking down a long corridor the redhead begins to speak. “Okay so I was Miranda’s second assistant. Her first assistant was recently promoted so now I am the first.”

“Oh you’re replacing yourself” Andy said as she follows behind her.

“Well I am trying Miranda has sacked a different girl every week. We need to find someone who can survive here. Do you understand?”

“Yes of course. Who’s Miranda?”

Emily keeps walking but turns with a look of horror on her face “Oh my god! I will pretend you just did not ask me that. She is the Editor In Chief of Runway. Not to mention a legend. Work a year for her and you can get a job at any magazine you want. A million girls would kill for this job.”

“Sounds like a great opportunity I would love to be considered.” Andy said as they entered the office.

Emily turned and chuckled “Andrea, Runway is a fashion magazine so interest in fashion is crucial.”

Andy shook her head slightly ‘going to love working with her’ and said “what makes you think I am not interested in fashion.”

Just then the redhead’s blackberry rang. “Oh my god no, no, no.”

“What’s wrong” asks Andy.

Suddenly people are moving in every direction. Everyone had a common look in their eyes ‘fear’. Emily is now running back and forth between the offices. Andy noticed how panicked the girl looks while placing magazines, pouring Pellegrino into a glass and placing it on the Editors desk. Andy thought she was watching a movie. It was actually entertaining. Then Emily darted back down the same hall in which they came from.

Andy sat at a desk and waited. Her first glimpse of Miranda lived up to her expectations. Miranda entered the office rattling off instructions while a nervous Emily frantically writes them down. Without missing a beat she removes her coat while speaking. Andy was mesmerized. Miranda was beautiful and definitely had a presence.  She oozed self control. ‘So this is the legendary Dragon Lady.’ Andy watched as the pair entered the other office. ‘This might be tougher than I thought’.

A stunned looking Emily returned “She wants to see you”.

Andy got up ‘moment of truth’. Walking into Miranda’s office she handed her a resume and stood in front of the Editor’s desk. Andy was trying to size her up. Like a true lawyer she needed to watch all her movements carefully. Andy started speaking. “I am here to apply for the job as your assistant. I just recently graduated Northwestern. I majored in Journalism and was Editor of the school paper…” All of which was true except the recently graduated from and she minored in Journalism.

“What are you doing here?” Miranda replied as she casually moved things on her desk and then started to read the paper.

Andy was annoyed that Miranda was not looking at her, ‘What a bitch, at least pretend to be interested’ Andy was trying to keep her own attitude in check. Now is not the time to be confident. “Well to be quite honest, I need a job. I had no luck finding work as a writer. This came up so here I am.”  She took a deep breath ‘this is humiliating, I am a lawyer for god sakes.’ then continued “I will work really hard for you. I have great organizational skills, will be 100% dedicated to the job and will do whatever you ask.”  She was cringing on the inside ‘god I am pathetic.’

Miranda looked up at her and took off her glasses. A slight smirk appeared on her lips. She leaned back into her chair as her eyes took in the young woman in front of her. ‘No model but attractive, no style but Nigel will have a ball playing Queer Eye with her’ she thought. ‘HR might actually get the paperwork filed this time.’ She put her glasses back on and started reading the paper again. “I’ll hold you to that. You’re hired”.

Andy smiled “Thank you, you won’t…”

“That’s all.”

As soon as she existed the building she immediately made a call.

“Ravitz” the familiar voice answered.

“Stage one complete” chimed Andy

“Excellent” said a gleeful Irv. “Remember I want to know everything she does.”

“Got it” replied Andy.

“Just curious, what did you think of her?”

“She is …….well captivating to watch but I am sure working for her is going to be a different story.”

“Don’t worry if anything happens to you I will put you in for a Purple Heart.”

“If anything happens to me I will take said Heart and pin it on you and I know exactly where on you it will be.” Andy replied with a wicked tone and smile on her face.

“Ouch” an amused Irv replied.

“Exactly, I’ll be in touch. Bye Irv.” Andy closed her phone.

So yes, feedback is appreciated

Andy was working in her uptown office when the intercom buzzed.  “Yes" she answered.

“Irv Ravitz is here” said her assistant.

“Show him in Jen”. Andy got up and moved towards the door. “Irv, come in, nice to see you again”  she leans in to give him a kiss on the cheek and moves aside so he can enter.

“And you as well” he says.

Her office was spacious and bright. She had a large window behind her mahogany desk. Black and white lithographs on  the white walls. A large bookcase off to the side with volumes of Law books.

Irv notices a smll table with an Ivory Chess board which appears to be in mid game. “You’re still playing the same game with that person from France?”

Andy nods “yes, Jean Claude is an exceptional opponent but as you know I always win.”

Andy smiles and Irv gives a little chuckle as they go to sit.

Making himself comfortable on the leather couch, “I spoke to your Father the other day and he told me how well you are doing. He is very proud of you and so am I.”

“Thanks Irv that’s very nice to hear” Andy said sitting in the chair opposite him. “How are things at Elias-Clarke? You have the annual stock holders meeting in three months. Word on the street is that there is trouble brewing.”

Irv shuffled on the couch, “yes and no”.

“Come again” said Andy

“Yes there is something brewing and no it’s not about me, it’s because of me.”

Andy smirked “trying to drive up the stock prices before the meeting. I’m all for that. Between the stock I purchased and what you and my parents gave me for graduating from Princeton I can get a bigger apartment maybe even a townhouse”

“Andy if you help me I will buy you Miranda Priestly’s townhouse and move you in personally.”

Andy sat up straight, looked at her watch and then to Irv “Miranda Priestly. Wow Irv, it only took you five minutes to get to the ‘Why I hate Miranda Priestly and want her gone’ subject. Is this what you really want to talk about because if you do I want to have Jen make me some popcorn before you start?”

“Ha ha” said Irv. “You all can say what you will about her but none of you have to deal with her.”

Irv could go on and on about his hatred for Miranda. Andy has heard that speach over and over. His dislike of her is almost as legendary as the woman herself.

“Irv, I understand that the woman irritates the hell out you but the…”

“That’s putting it mildly” he said with more irritation in his voice.

“But the fact remains” Andy said calmly “she is Runway, she makes Elias-Clarke a ton of money annually and no matter how much you despise her…….”

“A lot” Irv added.

Andy rolled her eyed and leaned forward. “Miranda Priestly has a ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card with the Board.” She sat back and continued “The Board will stop you, as it has in the past, to get rid of her. You will have to keep doing what you have been doing, make her life miserable and hope she leaves. Although, after over twenty years as Editor, I think she is pretty much immune to you.”

“Is that so” Irv said with a wicked smirk on his face.

“Yes” said Andy standing up. “Unless you have found some way to get to her, I would suggest that you move on with your life, or get some therapy because your obsession with her is borderline psychotic.”

Irv looked up at Andy. “Who needs therapy when I have you?”

“Huh?”  Said Andy

“I figured it out. How to get rid of her and you’re the key. That’s why I am here, to offer you a job.”

Andy sat down again and looked straight at Irv “you’re serious, aren’t you?”

“Yes.”

“You do know that I have a job being that you’re in my office?”

“Yes again. Andy just hear me out.” He rested his elbows on his knees and rubbed his hands together.

“Okay” she said sitting back with a stunned look on her face.

“Miranda goes through assistants like their water. This month she has fired five. I almost understand why. “ He chuckled and waved his hand as he spoke. “They are all glitz and glamour. Wantabe models who want to be near their icon. She needs a well organized, business oriented assistant.  Of course not just any assistant but a smart, beautiful, young one who could……… well I don’t Know, keep me well informed of what she is doing?”

“Oh no way Irv!”  she practically shouted and pushed up out of the chair. “First off I have a job and…”

“Take a leave of absence.” Irv stood and faced her.

“Second there is no way she would hire me, I know nothing of fashion nor do I care I am an Attorney.”

“Leave that to me” he said smugly.

“Third and here’s the big one, nobody in their right mind would do this! If Miranda finds out she will cut of my head, chop me into pieces and use them as decoupage!”

“Andy, she won’t find out. It is just until the stockholders meeting and I will cover all you expenses. You will not have to worry about rent and I will even spring for a new wardrobe.”

Andy sat down again. She looked totally bewildered. Shaking her head back and forth she finally spoke.

“Why should I do this?” gazing at him “I have nothing against Miranda Priestly. She is actually someone I admire. She is successful, powerful and beautiful to boot. Why Irv, why should I risk everything for your obsession?”

“Because Andy I am asking “ Irv said in a calm voice and took a step closer “and that’s what family do, they help each other.”

She exhaled slowly. Rubbing her forehead with two fingers her mind was racing. ‘He finally checked into Hotel Crazy and wants me to get the adjoining room’. Her mind thinks back to who  helped her family after her father lost his job. Her Father would want her to help him, if only so he would finally shut up about her.  Damn guilt sucks.

Andy sighed and shook her head looking down. “I am going to regret this I just know it.”

Irv grinned “Does that mean you’ll do it?”

“Against all better judgment, yes I will do it.” Walking towards her desk, “but if I get caught you will not have to worry about the wrath of Miranda because I will kill you myself.” Andy picks up her phone, “now get out because I am about to tell Simon that I am taking a leave of absence and I am sure it isn’t going to be pretty.”

Irv started to walk towards the door. “I will get you the information you need.  No emails only contact me on my cell phone.” He turned and looked at Andy before he left “thank you.”

“Don’t thank me yet. I never liked Mission Impossible and I am no James Bond. Now go.”

As the door closed Andy put down the phone. She turned her chair back to face the window and leaned back. ‘Damn. What have I agreed to?’
